Will there be a new station at South Yarra as part of Melbourne Metro?
A new station in South Yarra is not in the scope of the Melbourne Metro project.
The rail corridor near South Yarra station is a complex and constrained urban environment, making it a challenging place to build new platforms.
The Melbourne Metro allows for longer, high capacity trains. Longer trains need longer platforms, and it is difficult to accommodate lengthy platforms in South Yarra without causing significant impacts to the surrounding area during construction, including increased land acquisition. Upon completion of Melbourne Metro, passengers using South Yarra station at its current location will benefit from improved capacity and more frequent services on the Frankston and Sandringham lines.
Will the existing South Yarra station be upgraded as part of Melbourne Metro?
Upgrades to the existing South Yarra station are not in the scope of Melbourne Metro, however that does not mean that improvements to South Yarra Station will not occur in the future. Improvements to stations are considered by Public Transport Victoria through its network development planning. The Melbourne Metro Rail Authority (MMRA) will work with the City of Stonnington and other South Yarra stakeholders as the project is planned and developed.
Will the tunnel entrance and construction site be in Fawkner Park or on St Kilda Road?
MMRA is looking at opportunities to temporarily occupy land at key locations along the project alignment to support construction works, whilst minimising impacts on private properties. As part of these considerations, a section of Fawkner Park or land in the vicinity of the proposed Domain station location could be temporarily used as a support site and staging area for the project's Tunnel Boring Machines.
In the event that Fawkner Park is required for this purpose, MMRA would work closely with City of Melbourne and local residents to minimise impacts on local amenity during the works and ensure the area is reinstated after construction is complete.
What disruption will be experienced on Domain Road, Toorak Road and elsewhere?
It is proposed that the construction of Domain station will be staged to reduce impacts on the road and tram network while protecting and maintaining access to nearby buildings and facilities.
It is expected that Domain Road, near St Kilda Road, will be temporarily closed for an extended period while the Domain station box is excavated.
Trams currently travelling along Domain Road and Park Street will need to be temporarily rerouted via Toorak Road West during this time. To facilitate this change, tram infrastructure will be installed along Toorak Road West between Park Street, South Yarra and St Kilda Road.
Trams will keep running along St Kilda Road as much as possible while the new Domain Station is constructed. Staged closures of St Kilda Road will enable excavation of the Domain station box while tram and traffic flow is maintained, albeit traffic lanes are likely to be reduced and works could involve temporary diversions for all road users including drivers, pedestrians and cyclists.
What about a connection to South Yarra station from the eastern tunnel entrance?
An additional connection at South Yarra as part of Melbourne Metro would cost a large amount of money and require the compulsory acquisition of more than 100 homes.
Upon completion of Melbourne Metro, passengers using South Yarra station at its current location will benefit from improved capacity and more frequent services on the Frankston and Sandringham lines.
